RICO ZOOK | Permaculture Designer, Consultant & Educator
Rico brings over four decades of experience in nature to his work. As well as creating and working with a wide variety of land-based systems in all types of climatic environments, for the past 22 years he has been a Permaculture designer, consultant and educator working with farmers, villagers, private individuals, and local organizations in northern India, Cambodia, Spain, USA, the mid-east and other parts of the world. This work focuses on assisting all levels of our global community to create culturally and environmentally appropriate life systems that are resilient and regenerative.
With a degree in Environmental Studies focused on Land Restoration, minors in biology and philosophy, with years of homesteading in northern California and working in Yosemite Nat’l Park, Rico came to permaculture with almost all the elements, but no organizing structure or system. From 1996 to 2005 he was first co-director and crew foreman for the land restoration crew, then land manager at a wilderness community decimated by wildfire in the mountain wilderness of northern New Mexico. Guided and mentored by Ben Haggard (https://regenesisgroup.com/team), for ten years Rico did hands-on permaculture design and installation rebuilding a community and village from the ground up.
Over the years he has worked from the village level to the international. For the International Permaculture Convergence in India he organized, managed and taught the pre convergence PDC, with Robyn Francis and an Int’l instructor crew, and Teacher training, with Jude Hobbs (https://cascadiapermaculture.com/). Currently much of his work is assisting and mentoring his advanced students who are now working in permaculture and evolving as instructors. Visit his website: i-permaculture.org
For everybody from young to old from all backgrounds and all walks of life! In particular those wanting to lead projects of regeneration, urban agriculture, community development, and broad-scale farming. This unique opportunity to recharge and gain environmental literacy will be spent over 16 days in a natural environment with limited access to wifi and transport links. Total natural immersion is to be expected and hopefully embraced.
Permaculture is the harmonious integration of all life kingdoms into agriculturally productive ecosystems and socially just environments, producing sound economic outcomes through systems management. It is a regenerative design intention reflecting patterns in nature that seeks to build interconnections allowing for energy efficiency and abundance of yield.
In other words it is ecology in action, positive responses to new opportunities as culture evolves towards a new height of consciousness.
This spirit will be reflected in the learning community and atmosphere we shape together during the program.
1- It is a ethical and transparent investment.
2-We offer an internationally recognised and certified learning by doing experience
3-The diverse learning environment will appeal to multiple learning styles
4- Facilitator’s combine an in-depth understanding and many years of experience of permaculture at the personal, practical and community level.
5- We create space to help you crystallise your personal permaculture projects and dreams.
6- Last but not least, the course is based in a unique location of great natural beauty in the heart of the Alta Garrotxa.
SITE INFORMATION
Can Lliure is a place for mindful human-nature relationships. Our aim is to create a Living, Learning & Research Centre for developing one’s capacities to realize their inherent potentialities with nature’s guidance and support.
We see Can Lliure as an important, vibrant place and seeding ground for learning to harmoniously integrate ourselves and the wider global community with our planetary environment so we can enjoy its bounties in a sustainable manner.
Can Lliure is based in the wonderful and magical Alta Garrotxa area close to the Spanish Pyrenees. The land we are in Stewardship of is 100ha and is mainly covered in wild Oak forest with lots of wild goats, boars and limestone cliffs. There are 3.5 ha of cleared terraces with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. We recently started to regenerate these terraces that in the future will become a diverse Syntropic Agroecosystem with integrated organic vegetable gardens. We are very blessed and very grateful to have a clean natural freshwater spring on our land from which we drink. We also have a few simple structures like outdoor showers, compost toilets, geodesic dome and bell tent to accommodate and host people to enjoy this wild and natural place.
ACCOMMODATION, FOOD, AND SITE INFORMATION
SLEEPING
During the courses students get a chance to experience our land and permaculture site more intimately by camping on the land in your own tent. Please bring all the equipment needed to camp and sleep comfortable. In a semi-wild area, we have several level terraces among the trees and stones for people to pitch their tents in a beautiful natural setting surrounded by mountains and forest.
We have limited shared dormitory available as well.
There is the possibility for some students with their own bus/camper-van to stay on the land, although space is also limited for this. If you are interested in bringing a bus, please get in touch and we’ll do our best to accommodate everyone! Also we have limited private accommodation available for an extra cost.
FOOD
From the communal kitchen, we provide 3 meals per day, all included in the cost of the course (except on the one day off when the students are free to feed themselves!). Prepared with love, the food is always diverse, fresh, healthy, homemade and vegetarian. To support local farmers and to stimulate the local food economy we purchase what ingredients are not grown at Can Lliure from the local organic “Cooperativa” and other local producers and processors
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS IN ADVANCE!
CELLPHONE AND WIFI:
We have cellphone reception on site and also Internet signal will reach here. At this moment we do not provide any wifi as we are keeping bees and want to limit signal pollution on site. We are fine if you bring your own device and use it for during the course on site.

Please for students who come by car arrange with your co-participants in advance for CAR SHARE as this would be highly appreciate we only have 1 car ourselves and it means many rides up and down the mountain for us to pick everyone up!
